The 500-seat Liberty Theater in downtown Silver City in the the southwestern corner of New Mexico, first opened in 1923 and was re-named the Silco Theater in 1926. The new name of the theater was inspired by the local silver and copper mining industry. By the 1960s, the Silco Theater had closed down and was converted into a furniture store and warehouse. A false floor had been installed over the original seats and raked theater floor. By the 1990s, the furniture store had failed, and the Silco was up for sale. Silver City Main Street negotiated a long-term lease with the owners about 2008 with the intention of restoring the theater. In 2013, the Town of Silver City and Silver City Main Street purchased the property with the assistance of a state capital outlay grant from the New Mexico Main Street program. The theater is undergoing a substantial rehabilitation to restore the theater as a first-run cinema in 2015.
