Chihuahua Hill Historic District

Southwest Region

Constructed 1880

The small adobe chapel “La Capilla” overlooks Silver City’s oldest residential neighborhood, Chihuahua Hill. The neighborhood evolved from a tent city in the 1870s shortly after the town was founded. The discovery of silver and copper in the vicinity caused boomtown growth and the railroad’s arrival in the 1880s fueled the development of downtown Silver City on the district’s northern edge. Today Chihuahua Hill features many fine adobe houses, attractive fences and yards that line picturesque streets hugging the hilly topography.
